Four root vegetables sit in a row of soil. A carrot, a radish, a beet, an onion — each with a face, each smiling, each with its roots visible in the soil. Around them, in capital letters, the shirt reads: LET’S ROOT FOR EACH OTHER AND WATCH EACH OTHER GROW. That is the whole design.… Read More: The ‘Let’s Root For Each Other’ Shirt: Two Meanings of… »

Editorial note: This publication and Quirky Cotton Collective share an owner. The native garment preview shows large bold white lowercase meh. lettering on a dark shirt. No animal illustration is present. That is the whole design. A period at the end, which matters more than it looks. Most slogan shirts fail because they ask the… Read More: The ‘meh.’ Shirt: Why a Dismissive Word Works as a… »

Main entity: The Latin American embedded engineering narrative — a set of design assumptions, field constraints, and reliability practices that differ fundamentally from the Silicon Valley default. Adjacent concepts include split-phase mains resilience, brownout-tolerant firmware, tropical ingress protection, and intermittent connectivity design. This matters because a board that survives a San Francisco lab bench can… Read More: Why Latin American Tech Needs Its Own Engineering Narrative, Not… »

Reliability and availability are not the same thing. In Brazilian field deployments—where 127V/220V split-phase mains sag under air-conditioner load, where 2G/3G/LoRa connectivity comes and goes like a bus in the interior, and where tropical humidity and ants treat your enclosure as an invitation—the distinction is not academic. It is the difference between a system that… Read More: The Difference Between Reliability and Availability in Field Systems »

Every embedded deployment is a story you’re telling a future maintainer. The system goes live. Everything works. You drive home satisfied. Then degradation creeps in — slowly enough that nobody notices until it becomes the new normal. Eventually the system fails, usually at the worst moment, in the worst place. And someone — maybe you,… Read More: Every embedded deployment is a story you’re telling a future… »

I learned the difference between reliability and availability the hard way. It was 2017, and I was standing in a flooded equipment room in Belém, ankle-deep in water, staring at a data logger that was technically “on” but hadn’t recorded a single usable data point in three days. The system was available—the power light was… Read More: Reliability vs. Availability: What Actually Matters When the Grid Fails… »

I learned the hard way that a 99.999% reliable server doesn’t mean a damn thing if you can’t get diesel for the generator. That’s the moment the textbook definitions of reliability and availability stopped being abstract metrics and started smelling like sweat, frustration, and a very quiet control room. In the embedded systems world, especially… Read More: Reliability vs. Availability: What Actually Matters When the Grid Fails… »

Tuesday. Feira de Santana, Bahia. The solar monitoring station had been dark for four days — not physically dark, mind you. Panels fine, battery charged, LEDs blinking. But the data link to the collection server in Salvador had gone silent, and nobody could figure out why. Not until someone drove three hours to the site,… Read More: Why Your Firmware Branch Named ‘fix_final_v2_REAL’ Is a Field Failure… »

Reliability and availability are not the same thing. In the world of embedded field systems—especially those running on unstable grids, spotty cellular backhaul, and inside enclosures that hit 45°C before breakfast—conflating the two will bite you. Reliability is the probability a system performs its intended function without failure for a given time under stated conditions.… Read More: Reliability vs. Availability in Field Systems: Why Your Uptime Metric… »

If you’ve ever stood in a dark server room listening to a UPS scream its last breath while your telemetry screen fades to black, you already know the difference between reliability and availability. You just might not have the words for it yet. In the embedded systems world—especially the one we inhabit at Fortec, where… Read More: Reliability vs. Availability: What Actually Matters When the Power Flickers »
